Dr. Frederick Douglas Burton was born and raised in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and graduated from John Bartam High School in 1966. He enlisted in the United States Air Force in 1967, where he was first introduced to medicine as a medical corpsman. He served as a medic until his honorable discharge on January 15,1971. Frederick worked at Saint Joseph's hospital while he attended Community College of Philadelphia. It was during this time that an old classmate of his whom was attending Jefferson University School of Medicine introduced him to the concept of Alternative Medicine, and the concept of avoiding chronic degenerative disease. Frederick knew first hand that traditional allopathic medicine helped to maintain the status quo, but did little to help his father who suffered with several chronic diseases: hypertension, diabetes, heart disease, and cancer to recover from his many illnesses. This new concept intrigued him, and he decided to pursue a career in medicine that would put him on tract to learn both traditional and non-traditional methods.
Upon his graduation from Community College, Frederick did a brief stint at Temple University before moving to New York to attend Long Island University. In 1976, he graduated from L.I.U magna cum laude, and moved to Nashville, Tennessee to attend Meharry Medical College. After graduating from Meharry on May 19, 1981, Dr. Burton went to Howard University for a medical internship in 1981 to 1982. He moved on to Providence Hospital 1982 to complete an internal medicine residency in June, 1984. He relocated back to Philadelphia in 1984 where he was employed with the public health system. Here, he diagnosed the first full-blown case of AIDS in a city health center. In 1986, Dr. Burton began what proved to be the turning point in his life and his career. He began training with a Naturopath, Dr. Glen Scudder in Morrisvile, PA, and was introduced to the concept of using Chinese Herbs, Homeopathy, Acupuncture, Chiropractic and Chelation Therapy, as a means of treating most or all of the common illnesses that people are routinely treated with standard allopathic medicine.
Dr. Burton is a doctor of Internal Medicine by training. He is now Pennsylvania's most renowned expert in Alternative Medicine. His work with AIDS, lupus, diabetes, cancer, and asthmatic patients has made him the most sought after physician in the tri-state area. Dr. Burton routinely sees patients from areas as far as Bermuda, Ohio, Virginia, Georgia, Boston, Colorado and all over the northeastern area of the United States. He also is treating a significant number of patients from the Pennsylvania Dutch community.
Dr. Burton believes that the general trend in medicine is making a significant shift to think of what he does as mainstream as opposed to being dismissed as mere "quackery". To quote Burton, "We are in the middle of a paradigm shift in American scientific thinking". Simply stated, the ways of the past that have been effective are going to become generally thought of as mainstream methods for the future and doctors who have been reluctant to accept this way of thinking will find themselves being ignored by their traditional patient population. This is because the patients are the ones who are marching to a different drummer and the doctors are just going to have to get in step.
Dr. Burton believes that alternative Medicine is truly scientific and in most instances more scientific and humane than orthodox medicine. His philosophy is "Practicing sensible medicine is to practice preventive medicine".
